Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of the straw and oxalic acid tests to identify resistance levels of white and colored cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) genotypes to white mold (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum). Ten genotypes were evaluated: five with colored fiber, four with white fiber, and a white-fiber susceptible genotype. The genotypes MAB-1 with white fiber and MAC-2 with colored fiber were the most resistant to white mold, according to the immersion in oxalic acid and straw tests, respectively. These genotypes can be recommended as resistance sources for breeding programs. Both assessed tests are complementary to each other; however, the straw test is more efficient in evaluating the resistance of cotton genotypes to white mold. |

ABSTRACT: During the winter seasons of 1997 and 1998, experiments were conducted under irrigation in the experimental area of Embrapa Cerrados Research Center at Planaltina, Federal District and in the experimental area of the Piratininga Region Agricultural Cooperative (Coopertinga), Northwest of Minas Gerais State. The objective was to identify cultivars that present the following characteristics; resistance to diseases, early maturity, high yeld, resistance to lodging, desirable plant height and good market acceptance, to be indicated for cultivation in the Federal District and the Northewest of Minas Gerais State. It was concluded that the cultivar BRS Valente is indicated for these regions, due to its high yield characteristics, erect type, resistance... |

ABSTRACT: Embrapa, through Embrapa Savanas and Embrapa Wheat have developed a new wheat cultivar, denoted BRS 264 (Triticum aestivum L), for the savana region of Central Brazil. The new cultivar is originated from the crossing Buckbuck/Chiroca/Tui. The selection from the F2 population was performed at Embrapa Savanas, at Planaltina, DF. It is indicated for irrigated cultivation during dry seasons, in Minas Gerais, Goiás, Bahia, Mato Grosso and Distrito Federal. This cultivar presents the following main features: high production potential, large adaptability, good agronomical characteristics, industrial quality according to the market demands and precocity (avarage period from the emergence until maturation of 110 days). The avarage grain yield is around... |

ABSTRACT: The biotrophic fungus Hemileia vastatrix causes coffee leaf rust (CLR), one of the most devastating diseases in Coffea arabica . Coffee, like other plants, has developed effective mechanisms to recognize and respond to infections caused by pathogens. Plant resistance gene analogs (RGAs) have been identified in certain plants as candidates for resistance ( R ) genes or membrane receptors that activate the R genes. The RGAs identified in different plants possess conserved domains that play specific roles in the fight against pathogens. Despite the importance of RGAs, in coffee plants these genes and other molecular mechanisms of disease resistance are still unknown. This study aimed to sequence and characterize candidate genes from coffee plants... |

ABSTRACT: Artificial neural networks (ANN) are computational models inspired by the neural systems of living beings capable of learning from examples and using them to solve problems such as non-linear prediction, and pattern recognition, in addition to several other applications. In this study, ANN were used to predict the value of the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) for the tomato late blight pathosystem. The AUDPC is widely used by epidemiologic studies of polycyclic diseases, especially those regarding quantitative resistance of genotypes. However, a series of six evaluations over time is necessary to obtain the final area value for this pathosystem. This study aimed to investigate the utilization of ANN to construct an AUDPC in the... |
